Blue moons have a special place in my heart since I was born and raised in Kentucky. Tonight’s Blue Moon isn’t as rare as some believe. Nature is a natural news hook you can use in your media pitching.

Seasonal news is also something to consider. What about surviving the heat? Ticks? Sunburns? Vacation blues? All these seasonal tie-ins are opportunities to provide media friends sound bites.

Speaking of seasonal news, many glossy magazines are writing up their holiday issues now, as well. So, every time I see “Christmas in July” angles, I think about the real Thanksgiving and Christmas, reminding myself that my friends over at glossy magazines are seeking fresh and exciting angles for their readers. Things like how to get along with family at holiday gatherings or how to stay trim during holiday meals.

Coming right up is back to school so prepare your back to school commentary for short lead time media such as radio, TV and daily newspapers.

In August, I’ll be planning a trip back home to Kentucky. Tonight, I’ll be singing Elvis’ famous tune, “Blue Moon of Kentucky” complete with a bluegrass twang.
